In partnership with Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO), Linda Elimisha Kike (LEK) is implementing the Mazingira Youth Voice Project, an initiative aimed at economically empowering young women through climate-resilient smart farming. The project not only creates employment opportunities for youth but also provides innovative solutions to address the challenges brought about by climate change.
Through smart agribusiness solutions such as pig farming and solar-powered irrigation, the project has successfully trained 40 youth in various modern farming methods. These include sorghum, millet, sweet potato, groundnut, and traditional vegetable farming. Beyond promoting women’s financial empowerment through the sale of their produce, the project has also led to increased food surplus for participating women and their families, significantly improving household nutrition.

Rural women often bear the greatest impact of climate change, as they depend heavily on rainfall for their agricultural activities. When rainfall patterns shift due to changing climate conditions, their livelihoods are severely affected. The Mazingira Youth Voice Project responds to this challenge by promoting climate-smart agricultural practices that enhance resilience and sustainability.
As part of the initiative, 1,000 trees have been planted by youth participants, demonstrating their commitment to environmental restoration and their understanding of the importance of caring for our planet for a healthier tomorrow.
Looking ahead, the project aims to serve as a training hub for youth in Busia County, equipping them with skills in climate-resilient smart farming and fostering a culture of environmental conservation and reforestation advocacy.
